Does your company struggle with staff shortages in the warehouse? How do you keep your employees comfortable and create a welcoming workplace?
I. The warehouse industry's problems with staff turnover.
A certain level of staff turnover is a positive and even desirable situation. It generates an inflow of new people who have the necessary knowledge and skills and have a fresh perspective on many issues.
On a larger scale, however, one has to consider whether this has a negative impact on the whole enterprise and does not burden the budget with excessive costs. It is estimated that the cost of replacing an employee – finding and implementing a new person – is 35-100% of the annual salary. Employee turnover is influenced by a number of factors, which should be analysed in depth and the appropriate conclusions drawn.
II. Ways of prevention.
First and foremost, it is necessary to take care of currently employed people. Studies show that the level of staff turnover in the EU is quite high at 20%. What are the main reasons for this? More than 60% of those surveyed say they aim to change jobs for the purpose of a pay rise. In turn, up to 91% admit that better salaries would be an incentive for them to change employer unplanned. More than half of this group value stability in employment, a friendly atmosphere and work-life balance.
1. Caring for existing employees.
✓ Remuneration.
The base should be based on the individual’s skills, experience and education. When calculating increases, it is worth taking inflation into account so that it does not reduce the assumed level of salary increase. Various types of employee benefits are also beneficial – but necessarily well thought out. For example, it used to be fashionable to have various “fruit” days or similar initiatives. Nowadays, such proposals are a source of laughter and embarrassment and are sometimes the basis for memes and many repeated jokes. There is a lot of room for manoeuvre here, but with the right sensitivity.
✓ Stability.
We have been in constant crisis for several years. Covid-19, recession, war… the problems can be multiplied. Many people are afraid of what tomorrow will bring and whether they will have a job. The peace of mind and the extra protection that an employment contract provides is now at a premium. Civil law contracts do not provide this.
✓ Work atmosphere.
Nothing discourages even the best employee more than a bad mood at work. This cannot be improved without clear boss-subordinate communication. Well-informed employees who have their responsibilities clearly explained to them are more likely to stay with the company and are more committed to their daily work.
✓ Work-life balance.
Man does not live by work alone. An employee also has a private life and must be able to plan it at his or her convenience. Generating a lot of overtime or postponing holidays increases fatigue, both physical and mental. Such a person becomes increasingly discouraged over time and less effective in his or her duties.
✓ Professional development.
Every newly recruited employee must undergo a full induction to eliminate mistakes. Those already in employment may need additional training, and they themselves often seek to acquire new qualifications and skills. Promotion and development opportunities are important factors that determine the direction of a career.
2. Seeking other opportunities to source staff.
✓ Employment agencies.
The company has fewer steps to take in such hiring. All formalities are taken care of by the agency, once a suitable employee is matched to the given requirements.
✓ Employment of people of retirement age.
Retirement is not a compulsion. An employee does not have to retire automatically at a certain age. Neither can they be forced to do so by their employer. They can continue to work under the same conditions. They also have a strong advantage over their younger colleagues – years of experience. Also for the employees themselves, the knowledge that they have already reached retirement age is much more comfortable.
✓ Foreigners.
There are currently around 6 million job vacancies in the EU. This is a record high since such statistics have been kept. One reason for this may be the changes in intra-EU migration that started with the pandemic.
Activating young people and encouraging older people to retire later is not enough to support employers in managing staff shortages. Many EU member states see the solution in simplifying procedures and allowing more immigration.
3. Taking care of work efficiency.
✓ Process automation.
Implementing the right processes and software offers more possibilities than the work of human hands. It ensures an almost flawless and fast flow of goods. It improves the safety of people and equipment. Warehouse space is better utilised and the efficiency of the entire warehouse increases.
✓ Adaptation of workstations and warehouse equipment.
In many warehouses, the lack of optimisation in order picking is a weak point in the entire process. This results in a loss of both time and, more tangibly – money.
III. Friendly workstation.
In order to prevent staff shortages in the warehouse, it is advisable to create friendly workplaces, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment that allows tasks to be performed professionally. Operators in such places do not get discouraged, and they perform the work assigned to them faster and better.
In this equipment segment, you can find multifunctional:
✓ Parcel packing tables.
They are easily adapted to the specific range, the technology used or the space available. The planned mounting height of the tabletop allows comfortable working regardless of a person’s height. A number of shelves and handles ensure that every tool is within easy reach.

✓ Computer / workstations.

✓ Modular workbenches.

✓ Warehouse trolleys.
Tailored to the nature and needs of your business. They speed up warehouse transport, increase employee productivity and improve order picking. Employees do not have to lift, are not fatigued and are more willing to take on more tasks.
✓ Storage shelves.
They significantly improve order in the warehouse, make it easier to access materials and improve effective stock verification. There is no distracting clutter or problems finding the items needed.
✓ Warehouse accessories.
They influence the efficiency and ergonomics of warehouse processes.
